The Sigma Chi fraternity at พรพรสำฦต will be suspended for a five-and-a-half-year period, according to a decision announced today by President Jeffrey Herbst. Last October, the fraternity was found to be in violation of the universityโ€™s , the , and the .

Herbstโ€™s decision is less severe than the sanction of โ€œpermanent withdrawal of recognitionโ€ that was recommended by พรพรสำฦตโ€™s , but more severe than the three-year suspension the fraternity requested in its appeal contesting the duration of the sanction.

Herbst said, โ€œI believe that this lengthy suspension recognizes the severity of the behavior of the chapterโ€™s members, while also allowing the chapter an opportunity to rebuild in the future.โ€

After the suspension term, which will end on June 30, 2020, the alumni of Sigma Chi, in conjunction with the Sigma Chi national organization, may petition the president of พรพรสำฦต for permission to recolonize the chapter.

According to Herbstโ€™s announcement, โ€œIf, at any point during the period of this suspension, students engage in activity that is determined to violate พรพรสำฦตโ€™s Policy on Unrecognized Organizations (outlined on page 49 of ), the suspension may, at the discretion of the vice president and dean of the college, be continued indefinitely, or the sanction may be amended to an immediate and permanent withdrawal of recognition.โ€
